The Portfolio Strategy team plays a critical role in ensuring that portfolio investments are strategic, data-driven, and aligned with corporate priorities. This team operates across research, development and commercial functions to provide structured insights and enable executive decision-making.

As Director, Decision Analysis PPM, you will be responsible for analyzing data, creating scenarios, and providing recommendations. You'll tackle complex asset and portfolio investment questions, integrating scientific, financial, and other insights to drive high-impact decisions as a strategic thought partner.

Responsibilities
  • Lead efforts to improve decision quality in the organization by developing and continuously improving decision analysis methodologies and best practices
  • Develop and maintain processes to incorporate uncertainties into asset/portfolio planning and execution, including facilitating uncertainty workshops
  • Work with Asset Teams, Program Management Leads, and SMEs to determine planning confidence levels and develop risk-adjusted development timelines
  • Enhance and facilitate processes to estimate pre-clinical and clinical probabilities of success
  • Develop and maintain multi-criteria scoring models to assess and compare assets
  • Develop and refine portfolio models that integrate attrition rates, clinical probability of success, timeline uncertainties, and commercial forecast scenarios
  • Execute portfolio optimization processes during financial planning cycles and maintain portfolio analysis tools
  • Structure and perform scenario analyses and simulations to model and value strategic alternatives at asset and portfolio levels
  • Provide support to teams for decision framing and decision analysis using established methodologies
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific or technical field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Engineering) or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of experience in strategy or portfolio management within pharmaceutical/biotech company, or equivalent experience in management consulting
  • Ability to perform and synthesize in-depth analyses of asset and portfolio information, integrating findings into actionable recommendations
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally across research, clinical development, commercial, and manufacturing teams
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MS or MBA) with strong understanding of drug development, R&D strategy, and decision analysis
  • Experience with decision analysis methodologies and tools
  • Portfolio modeling, scenario planning, or strategic investment frameworks using modeling and simulation software (e.g., @Risk, R, Analytica)
  • Strong business and financial acumen including DCF analysis
  • Cross-functional collaboration experience with diverse teams
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing environments

Job Description

We are looking for a product manager who has a strong grounding in Decision Analysis and a deep interest in technology ethics. This role is situated in the five pillars of Product Decision Intelligence: Product Evaluation, Portfolio Evaluation, Machine Learning Decision Intelligence, Experimentation Decision Intelligence, and End-to-End Data Products. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a strong capability to work at the intersection of decision intelligence (application of normative decision analysis) and responsible optimization. The four pillars of responsible optimization are: clarity on values, clarity on metrics, bias minimization, and explainability of decisions that come from AI-powered applications.

This role will require you to work closely with cross-functional teams such as Legal, Machine Learning, Analytics, Engineering, Product Management, Product Marketing, Legal, Fraud, and Finance. Responsibilities may include:

  • Engaging in Product Discovery workshops and writing high-quality specs for Optimization products that embody Decision Intelligence
  • Building stochastic simulations for scenario-evaluation
  • Supporting feature teams with framing workshops that bring in a sharp focus on decision quality through applications of tools such as the Decision Hierarchy and Strategy Table
  • Developing Decision Analytic evaluation models for product features and portfolios

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have an exposure to Decision Analysis (Applied Decision Theory) through coursework and work experience
  • Have an intuitive understanding of optimization methods and ML distinctions (classification models and how they are evaluated)
  • Have strong familiarity with building Decision Analysis evaluation models and simulations
  • Demonstrated writing and speaking ability
  • Have a learn-and-grow mentality and want to be challenged in a nurturing and supportive environment
  • Master's degree in a quantitative or technical field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Have an exposure to Apple's ecosystem and an understanding of Digital Commerce.
  • Have experience applying a liberal arts lens on technology, specifically technology ethics

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $129,600 and $236,300, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Education: Advanced degree (master's or Ph.D.) in Decision Science, Operations Research, Business Administration (MBA), Life Sciences, or a related field
  • Experience: 12+ years of experience in decision analysis, strategic facilitation, or a related discipline, with accomplishments in implementing decision quality processes and delivering measurable value

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in decision analysis methodologies, including decision trees, Monte Carlo simulation, and multi-criteria decision analysis
  • Advanced modelling abilities, with experience in software tools such as Analytica, DPL, @RISK, or other decision analysis platforms
