Abstract

When collaborating for better decisions, it is important to make the best use of everyone's precious time. Rapid prototyping, a well-established technique for structured decision making (SDM) in natural resource management, offers a powerful approach for accelerating SDM processes—and its benefits extend far beyond this field.

Decision-making is inherently iterative, and demonstrating the value of SDM early through rapid prototyping helps stakeholders quickly see tangible outcomes. This not only boosts engagement but also increases the likelihood of continued participation and future application of SDM processes. By showcasing quick, actionable insights, rapid prototyping fosters trust in the process and enhances decision-making efficiency—making it an invaluable tool for a wide range of decision professionals.

Meet the Speaker

Laura Keating Elske
Co-Founder, People & Planet Consulting

Laura is a decision practitioner passionate about applying structured decision making for a better world. She co-founded People & Planet Consulting, using decision science to help purpose-driven organizations scale their impact. She also serves as a decision analyst for the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo and previously worked with Strategic Decisions Group as a strategy consultant.

She holds a BSc in Environmental Science from Queen's University, an MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing from the University of Oxford, and a Professional Certificate in Strategic Decisions and Risk Management from Stanford University. Laura is a Certified Lead Practitioner with SDP and a Professional Biologist in Alberta.

Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, camping, yoga, and spending time with her two young children.
