Abstract:
The majority of my own (and others’) Structured Decision Making (SDM) work has been with industry or government clients. Over the past decade I have re-focused on two areas that, in my opinion, have been largely neglected by practitioners. One is bringing SDM insights to schools by embedding key lessons in the curricula taught to students at all levels – elementary, high school, and university. The other is bringing SDM insights to the legal system and to ongoing cases brought to Courts, with an emphasis on negotiations involving compensation payments to Indigenous nations. My presentation summarizes some of the methods, results, and lessons learned and emphasizes the collaborative nature of this work, be it with teachers and students or with lawyers, Indigenous leadership, and colleagues from related disciplines.
About the Speaker:
Robin Gregory is Senior Research Scientist with Decision Research Center at Oregon Research Institute; Adjunct Professor with IRES University of British Columbia; and President, ChoiceWorks Ltd. He is a social scientist with experience and training in the decision sciences, economics, ecology, and psychology. Robin works on problems of environmental risk management, Indigenous social and cultural impacts, stakeholder engagement, supporting teenagers’ and adults’ decision-skills, and structuring tough policy choices, emphasizing dialogue and analysis as aids to promote understanding of the opportunities provided by our ability to make value-focused choices.
