EventsSimple ways to avoid data visualization problemsSDP Free Webinar
Speaker: Michael Gerst, Assistant Research Professor, Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, University of Maryland Moderator: Carol Liffman, Sustainability Strategy Consultant, Liffman Advisory LLC With the increasing use of user-friendly data analytics, computer-based decision tools, and social media, data and information visualizations are increasingly important in data analysis, decision support, and communicating science. Despite this increase in use, scientists and analysts are often unaware of how visualization design should vary depending on the audience, and more generally, what makes an effective visualization. Dr. Gerst has worked with the U.S. Global Change Research Program (GCRP), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Geological Survey (USGS) on applying visualization best practices to improve how their products are understood by end users and the general public. Using a synthesis of the visualization scientific literature as well as results from the speaker's own work, this webinar will show how scientists and analysts can take their own existing visualizations and improve them to be better understood.
