Of the six elements of decision quality, four (frame, alternatives, trade-offs, and commitment) are primarily addressed in decision framing and two (information and reasoning) are primarily addressed in our analyses. For so long, our emphasis has been on the analytical tools and techniques but as much or more benefit can be gained through structured dialogue framing the problem (which is why we are steering toward the term Decision Quality, away from Decision Analysis).
In this SDP Calgary Chapter we’d like to host an open discussion on how each of us facilitates decision framing. Kent Burkholder from Decision Frameworks will start the discussions, showing the steps and tools he uses, and look to others to question, comment, suggest and counter. The room will be loaded up with flip charts to assist our discussion. Our objective is to better understand different methods and tools to help a team define:
1. Frame: What problem are we addressing?
2. Alternatives: What possible solutions should we consider?
3. Trade-offs: How should we compare the alternatives? What are our objectives or decision criteria?
4. Commitment: Who needs to be involved and what are their roles?
