As a young decision professional, I used to think it was all about finding “the best” answer. As I gained experience, I painfully learned that getting a good decision also required motivating people to want to move in a new direction.
The version of Decision Quality from the 80’s that I was taught has a huge blind spot, and I have developed a Decision Quality Version 2.0 that encompasses both the Head – finding a good answer – and the Heart – motivating strong action. I’ve found that it helps me engineer ways through decision problems that result in both better answers and deeper commitment to action.

ALPER FER joined Shell in 1993 as a Petroleum Engineer. In his career he held different roles covering subsurface development, project management as well as economics & business planning. Between 2014 and 2021 he has led a team of internal consultants supporting decision analysis and improvement of decision quality in Shell. As of 2022 he has taken the role of Economics & Decision Quality Advisor for an upcoming major project within Shell’s energy transition journey. Alper has been an active member in SDP since 2015.
